A high-level delegation from the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), led by its President S C Ralhan, met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today (August 28th) to discuss the growing challenges Indian exporters face in the wake of steep tariffs imposed by the United States.
During the meeting, Ralhan outlined the immediate concerns of the exporting community, stressing how higher US tariffs are affecting India’s market access, competitiveness, and employment. He urged the government to adopt swift and calibrated policy measures to protect exporters, who continue to play a vital role in driving growth and job creation across the country.
Government reassurance on US tariff impact
Responding to the concerns, Finance Minister Sitharaman reaffirmed that the government “stands firmly behind Indian exporters in this hour.” She emphasized the Centre’s commitment to addressing all pressing issues of the trade community and pledged to explore every possible avenue to safeguard India’s export interests.
The minister also stressed the importance of protecting workers’ livelihoods, calling on industry leaders to reassure employees of job continuity despite global headwinds. She assured that comprehensive government support would be extended to sustain export momentum and uphold India’s resilience in international trade.
Expressing gratitude, Ralhan said: “The Finance Minister’s reassurance has come as a great source of confidence for exporters. Her commitment that the government will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with exporters demonstrates the priority being accorded to safeguarding India’s trade interests and employment.”
The FIEO delegation included Vice President Ravikant Kapur, Director General & CEO Ajay Sahai, Farida Group Director Israr Ahmed, and EEPC Chairman Pankaj Chadha.
FIEO vows close partnership with government
FIEO reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with the government to overcome current challenges, diversify export markets, and strengthen India’s position in global trade. With the US tariffs adding fresh uncertainty, the organization underlined the need for exporters to be supported not only with immediate relief but also with long-term strategies to build resilience.
