The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports on the tragic collapse of an under-construction four-storey building in Delhi’s Daryaganj area that claimed the lives of three labourers on August 20, 2025.
The deceased, all migrant workers from Bihar, were part of a group of around 15 labourers working at the site when the incident occurred. Several others narrowly escaped as a portion of the building suddenly gave way.
Taking a serious view of the matter, the NHRC observed that if the reported details are true, they raise significant concerns of human rights violations. Accordingly, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Delhi, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi), seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered a case against the owner of the building and the contractor involved.
The collapse has once again raised questions about construction safety, labour rights, and regulatory oversight in Delhi. The NHRC’s intervention highlights the need for stricter accountability and protection of workers, especially vulnerable migrant labourers, in urban development projects.
