Punjab’s biggest School for the Deaf Children, run by the Ludhiana Educational Society on Hambran Road, celebrated its Annual Day and Foundation Day with enthusiasm on Sunday, showcasing student talent and reaffirming its role as a leading centre for differently-abled education in the state.

The event brought together key dignitaries, including Chief Guest and Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, and Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain. Society President Inderjit Chopra, Senior Vice President Stevon Soni and Honorary General Secretary Avinash Gupta welcomed them warmly.

Established in 1969, the school has grown into Punjab’s largest institution for hearing-impaired children, currently educating more than 230 students, including over 50 residing in its hostel. Children from across the state study here, making it a major centre for learning and rehabilitation.

During the programme, Minister Arora praised the school’s five-decade journey and its pioneering efforts in empowering differently-abled students. He also acknowledged the support of Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain for strengthening facilities for special-needs children.

The school highlighted its model of inclusive education, which goes beyond classroom learning and focuses on vocational skills such as Home Science, Tailoring, Electrical training, Beauty Parlour skills and Computer education. Administrators also stressed the urgent need for more teacher-training institutes in Punjab for special-needs education, noting that states like Tamil Nadu have far more developed infrastructure.

Officials appreciated government initiatives including the 3% reservation in state jobs and the recently introduced driving licence facility for hearing-impaired youth, calling them strong steps towards independence and dignity.

Students aged 5 to 18 performed cultural pieces including Shiv Vandana, Bharatanatyam, Rajasthani Ghoomar, patriotic acts and modelling segments, drawing applause from the audience. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Honorary General Secretary Avinash Gupta.

The celebration reflected the institution’s continued commitment to nurturing confidence, skills and a hopeful future for deaf children upholding a mission that began in 1969 and remains strong today.
