The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested a private person after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 in Ludhiana on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Sarbjit Singh alias Bittu of Haibowal Kalan, was arrested during a trap operation conducted by the Vigilance Bureau following a complaint lodged by a resident of New Baba Deep Singh Nagar.
According to Vigilance Bureau officials, the complainant's father had purchased a 60-square-yard plot in the city's Cycle Market and had taken possession of the property. However, the family later discovered that a relative had allegedly obtained a fake registry of the plot using a khasra number belonging to another locality.
During the course of inquiries, the complainant came in contact with Sarbjit Singh, who allegedly claimed that he had links with government officials and could get the disputed property registered in the complainant's name. The accused allegedly demanded ₹3.5 lakh for the work and sought ₹25,000 as an advance payment.
Officials said Sarbjit Singh later demanded ₹5,000 as the first installment. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau and reported the matter.
Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap and apprehended the accused while he was allegedly accepting the ₹5,000 bribe in the presence of two official witnesses.
The bureau has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at its Ludhiana police station. Investigators have launched further inquiries into the case.
