Punjab Cop Arrested While demanding Bribe for FIR Copy in Missing Girl Case

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Police Station Division No. 8, Ludhiana, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹14,000 from a complainant in connection with a missing person case.
The accused, identified as ASI Hardeep Singh No. 2415/LDH, was arrested during a trap operation conducted by the Vigilance Bureau Range Ludhiana. The bureau registered FIR No. 11 dated May 27, 2026, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018.
According to Vigilance officials, complainant Ram Ishwar, a resident of Gopal Nagar, Haibowal Kalan, Ludhiana, approached the bureau after the accused allegedly demanded money to take action on a complaint regarding his missing daughter.
Ram Ishwar stated that his 22-year-old daughter Khushbu, who had completed a tailoring course from Government ITI Girls, Ghumar Mandi, went missing on May 18 after visiting the institute to collect her result. After searching for her unsuccessfully, the family reported the matter at Police Station Division No. 8 on May 19.
Officials said ASI Hardeep Singh allegedly called the complainant to the police station on May 20 and demanded ₹20,000 for proceeding with the case. The accused allegedly accepted ₹6,000 on the spot and later demanded the remaining ₹14,000 for providing a copy of the FIR and taking further action in the investigation.
Following the complaint, DSP Shiv Chand of Vigilance Bureau Range-02 Ludhiana organized a trap operation. The bureau laid the trap in the presence of government witnesses and caught the accused red-handed while allegedly accepting the remaining bribe amount inside Police Station Division No. 8.
Vinwant Singh, SDO, Drainage Ludhiana, acted as the shadow witness during the operation, while Jaskaran Singh Sekhon, SDO, Drainage Ludhiana, served as an official witness.
The vigilance team included SI Mangal Singh, SI Anil Kumar, SI Gulsher Singh, ASI Manoj Kumar, ASI Satnam Singh, PHG Krishan Kumar, and PHG Munish Kumar.
The Vigilance Bureau said further investigation in the case is underway.
