The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted raids at multiple premises linked to Ashok Mittal, a noted industrialist and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP.
According to sources, the ED action was initiated against Mittal over alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
Sources also said that ED teams were carrying out searches at locations in Jalandhar and Phagwara, including the office of an educational institute belonging to Mittal, residences of family members, and offices associated with the group.
Officials were reportedly examining documents and electronic records as part of the ongoing probe.
The raid came close on the heels of Mittal assuming responsibility as AAP’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, replacing Raghav Chadha, who recently had a fallout with the party.
The raid has triggered a political storm in Punjab, with AAP leaders alleging that central agencies are being used to target opposition figures, while no official response has been issued by the ED regarding these claims.
The raids were ongoing as of the latest updates.
