IT Officer, Wife’s assets frozen by ED in DA Probe

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Guwahati Zonal Office, provisionally attached movable properties worth approximately ₹31.76 Lakh belonging to Income Tax Officer Khurshed Khan and his wife. The action comes under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, following an investigation into disproportionate assets acquired through corruption.

The ED initiated its probe after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), ACB, Guwahati, registered an FIR against Khurshed Khan. The CBI subsequently filed a charge sheet on December 27, 2021, before the Special Court, invoking Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) and 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, which deals with a public servant possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income.

ED investigators revealed that the former Income Tax Officer and his wife accumulated the disproportionate wealth, held as deposits in bank accounts and Post Offices, between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019. The agency determined that the couple derived these assets from "Proceeds of Crime" through the misuse of Khan’s official position.

The investigation uncovered that the couple had engaged in sophisticated money laundering activities to project their illegal funds as legitimate. These methods included unexplained cash deposits, layering of funds, and claiming fictitious sources of income such as false agricultural income, bogus gifts from relatives, reimbursement of questionable departmental bills, and false income from his wife’s supposed garment stitching work. Investigators also found that the pair made false and fabricated entries in a diary as they attempted to conceal the source of the illegally acquired properties.

The ED issued the Provisional Attachment Order (PAO No. 07/2025) on November 29, 2025, effectively freezing the properties to prevent their disposal during the ongoing PMLA proceedings.
