The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent posted with the CGST & Central Excise Commissionerate, Nashik, after he was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh from a complainant.

According to the CBI, a case was registered on October 14th against the accused official, following allegations that he had demanded an undue advantage of ₹50 lakh from a private company’s representative to avoid legal action in connection with an IGST input matter. The demand was later negotiated down to ₹22 lakh.

As per the complaint, the accused had instructed the complainant to pay ₹5 lakh on October 14th and the remaining ₹17 lakh on October 17th. Acting on the information, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the officer outside his Nashik office while allegedly receiving the first installment of the bribe amount.

Subsequent searches at the accused’s residence and office premises led to the recovery of ₹19 lakh in cash along with several incriminating documents.

The arrested officer was produced before the jurisdictional court in Pune on October 15, which remanded him to CBI custody for two days, till October 17th. The agency is continuing its investigation to ascertain possible involvement of others and the source of the recovered cash.
