In a significant move to bridge the gap between industrial requirements and vocational training, Tata Steel Foundation, in collaboration with Schneider Electric, inaugurated a state-of-the-art electrician workshop at the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Gill Road, on Friday.
The ceremony featured Saurav Rai, CEO of Tata Steel Foundation, and David William Augustine, Chief of the Steel Plant Ludhiana, as the chief guests. They were welcomed by Charanjit Singh Vishwakarma, Chairman of IMC ITI Ludhiana, and Baljinder Singh, Principal of the institute, before touring the facility’s advanced CNC and robotic welding departments.
Tata Steel Foundation invested approximately Rs 60 lakh to equip the new workshop with modern machinery tailored to current trade demands. The installation includes sophisticated solar water pumps, solar domestic lighting systems, house wiring layouts, and automated contactor control circuits to provide students with hands-on experience in renewable energy and industrial automation.
Local leadership played a key role in the event, as Sarpanches from six villages surrounding the upcoming Tata Steel plant in Kadiana attended the briefing. Officials urged these community leaders to motivate local youth to enroll in ITI courses, highlighting that specialized training at this facility would directly enhance their eligibility for employment opportunities at the new steel plant.
During an interactive session with learners, Saurav Rai emphasized that the workshop will provide better career paths for roughly 80 students every year. He noted that the primary goal is to ensure that the transition from the classroom to the shop floor is seamless for every trainee.
Charanjit Singh Vishwakarma remarked that the integration of new technology and modern equipment is essential for preparing learners according to global industrial standards. He stated that the facility would serve as a hub for experimental training, allowing students to master complex electrical systems before entering the workforce.
Principal Baljinder Singh closed the ceremony by expressing his gratitude to the corporate partners for their investment in the region's educational infrastructure. He noted that the synergy between industry leaders and educational institutions is the most effective way to create a skilled and self-reliant generation of workers.
