Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday inaugurated Tata Steel’s second-largest plant in India at Ludhiana, marking a historic milestone as Punjab becomes the first state in the country to produce steel using green energy through an Electric Arc Furnace-based facility. The Chief Minister unveiled the ₹3,200 crore project in the presence of Industry Minister Sanjeev Arora and senior officials, asserting that the plant will provide direct employment to 2,700 youth and indirect opportunities to 10,000 others.
The inauguration fulfills a major industrial commitment following the foundation stone laying in October 2023, positioning Ludhiana as a global hub for sustainable manufacturing. By utilizing 100% steel scrap as raw material, the facility aligns with global shifts toward resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. Chief Minister Mann emphasized that the establishment of such a world-class plant by the Tata Group reflects a deep trust in Punjab’s revamped pro-industry policies and stable governance.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated that the state government has secured investments worth ₹1.58 lakh crore over the last four years, creating over five lakh jobs to ensure Punjab’s youth find dignity and work within their home state. He noted that while previous flawed policies drove industries away, the current administration acts as a facilitator to bring them back. He further shared that the government has requested the Tata Group to start direct flights from Punjab to Western countries to better serve the Punjabi diaspora.
The Chief Minister paid tribute to the legacy of Ratan Tata, describing him as "Desh ka Beta" whose social responsibility and nation-building efforts continue to inspire. He reiterated that Punjab’s strong air, rail, and road connectivity makes it the most preferred destination for long-term manufacturing partners. The plant, spread across 115 acres, stands as a testament to the state’s transition from a predominantly agrarian economy to a competitive industrial powerhouse.
