Punjab’s industrial landscape is set for a significant boost as Tata Steel Ltd prepares to start operations at its new manufacturing facility in Ludhiana from March 2026, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Monday.
The state government and Tata Steel reached this milestone after months of planning and execution, reflecting deepening confidence in Punjab’s investment climate and manufacturing potential.
The plant, located near HiTech Valley in Ludhiana, will feature a 0.75 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) electric arc furnace-based steelmaking unit and an associated rebar mill. Spread across 115 acres, the facility was initially planned with a ₹2,600 crore investment, which has now risen to around ₹3,200 crore as the project advanced.
Chief Minister Mann said the unit is projected to directly and indirectly create approximately 2,500 jobs, offering a substantial employment opportunity for the local workforce.
The plant’s production process will use 100 % steel scrap as raw material, an eco-friendly approach that significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace technology. The adoption of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology aligns with Tata Steel’s broader commitment to sustainability in manufacturing.
Mann emphasized that this investment is not only a pivotal moment for Ludhiana’s industrial development but also represents Tata Steel’s second-largest plant in India after Jamshedpur and the company’s largest investment in Punjab to date. He added that the state government facilitated the execution of the project in a time-bound manner, highlighting Punjab’s industry-friendly policies and proactive governance.
According to company and government sources, the commencement of operations at this green and modern facility is expected to strengthen the region’s steel manufacturing ecosystem and attract further industrial investment in the years ahead.
